Novels
I usually have chances to read novels, no matter I read them just to kill the time, to entertain myself, or even for tests. According to the experiences that I have, I categorize novels into three kinds of novels, predicable, interesting, and dull.
The first kind of novel, predicable ones, as implied by name, is the novel that you can always know what will happen before you read it. Just like when I see the rosy beautiful sunset glow in the evening, I will know that the typhoon will come tomorrow. For instance, when the story is about the prince who has to beat the dragon and save the princess, I know that it is going to portray how dangerous it is for the prince to kill the dragon, and finally the prince will win and bring the princess back. Or when everything in the story seems perfect, like the husband and wife live a wonderful life, it always happens that the wife will suddenly be diagnosed as having a cancer. Then the husband will commit suicide and donate his organ to the wife. Things like that are always found in the predicable novel and that make the novel flat.
The second type of novel is the one that I like most. The plot of the story is interesting and attractive. Unlike the predictable novel, this kind of novel always gives me surprise. Once I read it, I will stick to it. Furthermore, the vivid and graphic descriptions in the novel make me feel that the things are just in front of me. The most important thing is its portrait of the roles’ emotions, which always show the roles’ inner struggles and feelings precisely. While I am reading it, I can learn a lot from it and improve my writing skill at the same time. To sum up, this kind of novel is so wonderful that I can’t put down the book, and even forget to eat.
The third kind of novel is very boring. At the very beginning of reading, I can tell that this kind of novel will make me doze off immediately. During the time that I force myself to read it, the idea to drop the book crosses my mind every five minutes. This kind of novel is full of doctrines and something like that, but its theories are ridiculous. I once read a book that tried to persuade people the human are the offspring of bears, and thus we have to worship them. I just can’t imagine what I’ll be like if my ancestor was a bear. Another book that overexaggerates the pollution of environment and overemphasizes the danger of living on the earth is also a boring book. This kind of novel just makes me feel like reading a bible.
Among those three kinds of novel, obviously I like the second ones most. In my point of view, novel’s function isn’t just entertainment but it can also teach people something. If a novel can provide people much to learn, it will be more worthwhile to read.
